Links in the Chain™ is an experiential education initiative for reflective encounters with the Holocaust. Designed to provide a unique learning experience for all of its participants, Links in the Chain™ offers interactive, discussion-oriented programming designed to enhance the individual’s learning experience of this dark chapter of Jewish history. Our programs encouraging critical thinking of issues relevant to the psychology of the Holocaust, the role of Antisemitism in its development, the components of momentary survival and the transformation of the human condition as a result of the unique persecutions imposed upon Jews. In an effort to protect the effectiveness and sustainability of Holocaust memory for future generations, we seek to ensure that learners are able to establish a level understanding drawn from cognitive engagement as well as emotional internalization. Recognition of each individual’s ability to make a difference in the world is how we give to the past a living future as we become a link in the chain of Jewish history and memory, for the future of the Jewish people.
Links in the Chain™ programs are developed under the leadership and expertise of Elana Yael Heideman, PhD who offers a strong background in Jewish experiential education. Programs are specially designed for each client, and range from Eastern European journeys of heritage to enrichment seminars and workshops.
Links in the Chain™ Journeys include visits to Jewish communities of the past, sites of destruction during the Shoah, and interactions with both Jewish and non-Jewish locals for an understanding of the issues relevant today. An emphasis on Yiddishkeit, Jewish identity, family and community invite the participants to engage with the legacy of what was lost, and to recognize that we, the generations after the Holocaust, are the witness to the witness for the future. Our journeys encourage analysis of the warped logic that influences the growth of Antisemitism in the past and today, the stages of implementation of Nazi ideology in the various Nazi-occupied territories, the causes of local collaboration and the forces behind the overwhelming indifference of the world which allowed the Holocaust to take place. Our journeys enable participants to return to their home communities and private lives with a powerful and life-changing experience.
Links in the Chain™ Seminars offer a unique learning opportunity that is specially designed for young leaders from a spectrum of communities. We invite learners to engage in a sociological, psychological and cultural analysis of the humanity of Eastern European Jewry and the processes that brought about its destruction. Our past participants represent a myriad of religions, identities, nationalities, educational levels and backgrounds. This diversity assists the participants in exploring the range of perspectives present in a reflective study of the Holocaust.
